Genfan Family Farm

Alisin Genfan of Genfan Family Farm in Martindale, Texas sells her farm’s produce at the San Marcos Farmers Market every Saturday morning.

Genfan has farmed professionally for over 20 years and has enjoyed gardening from a young age. For the past five years, Genfan has sold only at the San Marcos farmers market. According to Genfan, as the San Marcos community has grown, it’s become easier for her to farm for the growing population.

Genfan enjoys getting to know her customers and seeing them week after week. She has built relationships with the people in the community and has known some for years.

Genfan Family Farm sells mostly okra, tomatillos, tomatoes, flowers and eggs. Genfan has tried growing a variety of flowers and fruit, and through trial and error has procured a collection of plants that are grown with care on the family’s farm. Genfan’s passion lies in her green thumb and she takes great pride in her vocation.

According to Genfan, the greatest challenge of being a farmer is the slowing down of the summer and winter months. The heat of summer and the brisk winds of January and February discourage customers from coming to the farmers market and browsing the produce.

“Farming or gardening, it’s the same. Big garden or small farm,” Genfan said about her plot of land that features flowers along with a variety of fruit.

The San Marcos farmers market is open twice a week. Every Tuesday from 3-6 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

On Tuesdays, the farmers market is located at 312 E. Hopkins St., and the Saturday location is on San Antonio Street, between Guadalupe Street and LBJ Drive.
